Watercolors

I make watercolors focused on affirmations and mental health. This started with a series, “Stop Undressing Me with Your Eyes,” which I initially painted as a way of externalizing all the things I wanted to shout at street creepers. Obviously shouting angrily at would-be harassers isn’t advisable while living under the patriarchy, but I found watercoloring my feelings to be a really effective way of at least acknowledging them to myself.

From that point forward, I used watercoloring as a therapeutic and artistic practice to externalize feelings I couldn’t express elsewhere and also to reiterate back to myself what I was learning elsewhere in my life. Particularly during the upheaval of the pandemic, watercoloring became a way for me to ground myself and orient myself towards the world in which I hope to live.

Many of these watercolors exist as greeting cards and wall prints. For an exhibition with the Holy Family 2020 Artist Collective, I created “I Am Not the Worst,” an installation with 20 different watercolored affirmations, printed on muslin cloth and sewn into banners.
